Banks Named Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach

Comes to Yale from Michigan Stars Football Club

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Trevor Banks, who served as Chicago State's first Division I head coach and has previous experience as the associate head coach at Brown, has joined Kylie Stannard's staff as an assistant coach.

Banks, who holds his United States Soccer Federation A-Senior, comes to Yale from the Michigan Stars Football Club, where he served as head coach and sporting director. During his tenure, he helped guide the club to a record for overall wins in a season and the 2022 NISA Cup playoffs, the first playoff berth in club history. In addition, MSFC captured the 2022 Independent Cup championship, the first trophy earned in club history.

Previously, Banks was the first Division I soccer head coach at Chicago State where he built the program to compete in the Western Athletic Conference. During his tenure, the team posted a GPA of 3.33.

While in Chicago, Banks also assisted in the inaugural season for Chicago House Athletic Club assisting current Chicago Fire assistant and hall of famer CJ Brown.

Prior to CSU, Banks coached at Brown, joining the staff in July of 2016 as an assistant coach before being elevated to associate head coach in February 2017. Banks was a part of all aspects of the program and helped develop multiple award winners on and off the field, including three players selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Team, 19 All-Ivy selections, one named to the All-New England Freshman team, multiple Academic All-Ivy selections and one United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America honoree. In addition to his duties at Brown, Banks was also the technical director and coach of the 2002 Elite National Premier League team with Bruno United FC. In 2019, Banks and his 2002 Bruno team won the US Club Soccer Rhode Island State Championship and went on to the national finals of the US Club Soccer National Cup that same year.

"Trevor is a huge addition to the program, and I am very excited to work with him," Stannard said. "His experience speaks for itself, and I find it invaluable that he has head coaching experience and fully understands the full scope of responsibilities that it takes to run a Division I men's soccer program, as well as the nuances of the Ivy League. This experience helps him understand how to be a great assistant. He brings a lot of high energy, which is great for the players, but also the rest of the coaching staff.  His energetic personality, elite work ethic and competitive drive also makes him an elite recruiter and he is going to elevate our program immensely in this pivotal area.  Trevor is a good coach and an even better person.  He is already hitting the ground running and making the program better."

Banks also has coaching stints at Villanova University, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Long Island Rough Riders, and Barry University. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at William Woods University.

"First off, I'd like to thank and give praise to my mom," Banks said. "If she didn't instill in me the traits she did when I was younger, I wouldn't have this opportunity. The only reason I am where I am in life is due to her, and I'll forever be grateful. I must also give a lot of thanks to Coach Stannard through this process. From day one, when he made the call to me about Yale and the men's soccer program, he had a vision, and it was exciting to hear how I fit in that vision. Coach Stannard, in a lot of different ways, showed his belief in what I would bring to Yale men's soccer which was hard to pass up. When I stepped foot on campus, that vision Coach Stannard described, was more prevalent to me and aligned with what I wanted while also showing me Yale was the home away from home for me. I'm thrilled to be starting this journey with Yale and the men's soccer program."

A native of Carencro, Louisiana, Banks earned a degree in Communications Arts from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2009 and added a master's degree in Athletic Administration from William Woods University in 2010.
