RICHMOND, Va. – Jimmy Chatfield homered in both games for Yale and reached base six times in today's doubleheader at Richmond.
Yale lost game one 11-7, and fell in the second 16-6. Despite dropping both games of the day, the Bulldogs received multiple standout performances at the plate.
Chatfield finished the day 4 for 7 with five RBI and two walks, while
AJ Gaich led off game one with a homer and had three hits while reaching base five times. Chatfield has now reached base in 41 straight games dating back to last season.
In game one, Gaich and Chatfield both launched solo shots in the first to give Yale the early lead. The Bulldogs would score four more times in the third to take a 6-3 edge.
Chatfield started the scoring and delivered a two-run single to score Gaich and
Jake Williams.
Carson Swank followed to score
Colton Shaw on a fielder's choice, and
Ben Metzner capped the rally by reaching on an error to score Swank, who also added another RBI in the seventh.
Richmond scored six unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth.
In the nightcap, the Yale offense had 14 hits but left 11 runners on base. The Bulldogs fell behind 8-1 after three but scored four in the fourth.
Max Imhoff singled home Gaich and
Robert Ciulla. Chatfield followed with a two-run blast to score Imhoff.
Six different Bulldogs had at least two hits:
Hayden Sobecki, Imhoff, Chatfield,
Tommy Martin,
Jeff Pierantoni and
Davis Hanson, who had run-scoring singles in the first and seventh.
Yale returns to action next weekend with a three-game series at Alabama State.
