NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Less than a month after earning a thrilling 71-70 overtime win at Harvard that involved rallying from eight points down with 3:45 to play in regulation, the Yale women's basketball team nearly pulled off another comeback. The Bulldogs outscored the Crimson 31-17 in the fourth quarter Friday night at Lee Amphitheater, closing to within 10 after trailing by as many as 27. But time ran out on this Yale comeback, and Harvard hung on for a 67-54 win.
Yale (10-11, 4-4 Ivy League) was led by another double-double from sophomore guard
Nyla McGill, whose 20 rebounds were four away from the school record (set by Barb Liebowitz '78 twice, in 1976 and 1977). McGill added a team-best 17 points and three steals. Junior guard
Klara Astrom added nine points, three rebounds and two steals.
Harvard (13-7, 6-2 Ivy League) led 14-9 after one and began pulling away by outscoring Yale 19-4 in the second and 17-10 in the third. But the Bulldogs clamped down in the fourth; Harvard got just one field goal in the first 5:26. The Crimson lead ultimately proved too large, however. By the time the Bulldogs got it down to 10 – 60-50 on a free throw by sophomore guard
Mackenzie Egger – there were just 31 seconds left.
The game marked the first career start for junior forward
Brenna McDonald, who chipped in four blocks, three rebounds and two points in 21:46.
McGill's 20 rebounds are third most in a game by an Ivy Leaguer this season, trailing only two efforts by Princeton's Ellie Mitchell (23 Nov. 14, 2022 and 22 Jan. 6, 2023).
Yale remains one game behind fourth-place Penn, which lost to Columbia 72-50 Friday night. The Bulldogs host Dartmouth Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
