NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brad Sharp and
Matt Brandau both scored three goals to pace the No. 9 Bulldogs to an 11-9 victory over No. 19 Denver on Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium.
Sharp netted two goals in the first quarter, including two in the first four and a half minutes, to give Yale the early lead. Brandau, who recently reached 200 points in his career, had a five-point day and broke a 2-2 tie in the opening quarter with his first goal of the day.
Yale never trailed again and took a 7-5 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs (3-1) pulled away in the third. Sharp got the scoring going in the third – the first of three Yale goals in the quarter.
Brandau scored about a minute after Sharp, and
Kyle Zawadzki added his first goal of the year to give Yale the 10-5 lead.
Patrick Hackler scored an insurance goal at the 10:36 mark of the fourth to make it 11-6.
Denver scored three straight goals, including the last one with 2:10 to go.
Jared Paquette made 13 saves for Yale, including a nifty stop in the final 30 seconds to preserve the victory.
The Bulldogs, who held a 39-35 edge in shots, also had goals from
Johnny Keib and two from
Max Krevsky. Yale returns to action next Saturday with a home game against Cornell.
