Total Team Effort Yields 16-5 Win vs. Temple

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The team's leading goal scorer – who is also the leading goal scorer in the Ivy League – was held without a goal Saturday; and yet the No. 16 Yale women's lacrosse team still won by 11. Such was the depth of the Bulldogs' performance against Temple on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. Eight different players scored goals, the team had a season-high eight assists and got the game to running time (a 12-2 lead) 70 seconds into the second half en route to a decisive 16-5 victory. A dominant defense limited Temple to 15 shots, and the Bulldogs had 14 caused turnovers.

It was not as if sophomore attacker Jenna Collignon – who entered the day with a league-best 28 goals – did not contribute; even though she did not score, she wound up with a game-high seven draw controls and had an assist. This all came on the heels of her scoring seven of Yale's 15 goals in Tuesday night's win at No. 15 Duke. On Saturday the scoring load was carried by a variety of players, highlighted by an eight-point day for senior attacker Olivia Penoyer (one shy of her career high). She had three goals and five assists, while junior attacker Bri Carrasquillo had a team-best four goals (on six shots). Sophomore midfielder Fallon Vaughn added a hat trick, and senior midfielder Payton Vaughn had a pair of goals.

Four Bulldogs – sophomore attacker Charlotte Callahan, sophomore midfielder Taylor Lane, first-year midfielder Bella Saviano and sophomore midfielder Sophie Straka – had one goal each. Callahan's was noteworthy in that it was her first career goal; Lane's was noteworthy in that it came in spectacular fashion, a behind-the-back effort in the final seconds of the first quarter. In addition to Penoyer and Collignon, sophomore attacker Caroline Burt and junior attacker Chloe Conaghan had assists.

Payton Vaughn led Yale's defensive effort with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Luanna Summer, making her second career start, finished with five saves and held Temple (5-4, 0-0 AAC) scoreless on a pair of free position shots.

Lane's all-around day included four draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers along with one ground ball in addition to her highlight-reel goal.

The decisive win showed that the Bulldogs are intent on building from the momentum of the thrilling win at Duke from four days earlier – their second in 10 days against a top 15 opponent. They are now off until next Saturday, when they host Dartmouth at 1:00 p.m.
