Harvard Hangs On To Win See-Saw Battle, 10-9

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Another memorable chapter of the Yale-Harvard rivalry took place Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field – and unfortunately for the No. 16 Yale women's lacrosse team it did not have a happy ending. The game was tied eight times – including 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7 and 8-8 – as both teams battled hard on a gorgeous spring afternoon. A pair of goals by the Crimson early in the fourth quarter ultimately proved to be the difference-makers, as Harvard came away with a 10-9 win.
 
Yale (9-4, 3-2 Ivy League) got another hat trick from sophomore attacker Jenna Collignon – her ninth of the season. All of her goals came on free position attempts, including two in a span of less than a minute early in the third quarter that gave Yale a 7-6 lead. After Harvard tied the game 7-7, the Bulldogs' Carrasquillo sisters combined for the go-ahead goal at 2:55 of the third. Junior attacker Bri Carrasquillo set up sophomore midfielder Sky Carrasquillo for that one.
 
But Harvard (7-5, 3-2 Ivy League) scored the next three goals – the only time all game that one team scored more than two straight. 
 
A critical play came with 4:21 left, when Sky Carrasquillo took a feed from Collignon and fired in what appeared to be Yale's ninth goal. But after the officials conferred, she was charged with a foul, negating the goal and giving the ball to the Crimson.  
 
The Bulldogs came up with the defensive stand they needed, getting an interception from sophomore attacker Caroline Burt to end the Harvard possession. Sky Carrasquillo then scored with 2:49 left to get Yale within 10-9. 
 
Collignon won the draw control – her ninth of the day – but the Bulldogs turned the ball over in Harvard territory with just over a minute to play and the Crimson were able to run out the clock.
 
Collignon finished with four points (3-1-4), and the Bulldogs also got multiple-point outings from Bri Carrasquillo (0-2-2), Sky Carrasquillo (2-0-2) and sophomore midfielder Fallon Vaughn (1-1-2). Sophomore midfielder Taylor Lane, senior attacker Olivia Penoyer and first-year midfielder Bella Saviano also had goals for Yale. 
 
Lane led the team in ground balls with five, while senior midfielder Payton Vaughn had four. Sophomore goalkeeper Cami Donadio made seven saves.
 
The loss drops Yale into a tie for third in the Ivy League standings with Harvard. No. 17 Penn beat Cornell on Saturday to remain unbeaten in Ivy play (4-0). No. 22 Princeton, whose game with Brown Saturday was suspended due to lightning with the Tigers leading 15-8 with 8:41 left in the third quarter, is 2-1 in league games and in second place. The Brown-Princeton game will resume Sunday at 12:00 p.m.; the Tigers also have a game at Penn coming up Wednesday that will help sort out the top of the Ivy standings.
 
Yale hosts Cornell next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for Senior Day.
