NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Emma Ramsey (Summit, N.J.), an incoming first year for the Yale field hockey team, has been chosen to compete at USA Field Hockey's 2023 Junior Nexus Championship. She is part of a group of 85 invitees at the U-21 level. Ramsey earned her spot following regional selection camp sessions earlier this year.
Nexus is USA Field Hockey's Olympic Development Pathway Program, and part of the tryout process for the Junior U.S. National Teams. Junior Nexus (formerly just Nexus) is for athletes who are 11 years old and older who are not yet enrolled in college. Senior Nexus (formerly High Performance Centers) is for athletes who have enrolled in college or older.
The Junior Nexus Championship will take place July 6 through 16 at USA Field Hockey's Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. Athletes will be divided into teams at each age level shortly. The U-21 age group is scheduled to compete July 15-16.
At the conclusion of the Junior Nexus Championship, top performing athletes in qualifying age groups will be invited to participate in the 2023 AAU Junior Olympic Games (July 26 to Aug. 5 in Des Moines, Iowa) and additional Junior National Team selection opportunities.
Ramsey has now been selected for Nexus Championships in each of the past three years, and she was selected for the U16 Junior Olympics in 2021. She is a graduate of Oak Knoll School, where she was a third team NFHCA All-American in 2021 and 2022. She helped her team win three state championships. She was selected as one of the Top 100 players in the nation for the class of 2023 by Max Field Hockey.
Ramsey's sister, forward
Lily Ramsey (Summit, N.J.), is a rising junior for the Bulldogs. There are multiple other Ivy League athletes in her family, including a cousin (
Nicholas Ramsey) who is a rising senior on the Yale men's lacrosse team.
In addition to Ramsey, all three Yale coaches are involved in the Nexus program.
Melissa Gonzalez, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey, is coaching at the U-14 Nexus Championship (July 6-8). Assistant Coach
Kerry Kiddoo is coaching at the U-14 and U-18 Nexus Championships (July 6-8 and July 12-14). Assistant coach
Jordan Page is coaching at the Senior Nexus Championship (July 11-16).
Prior to Ramsey, the most recent Bulldogs selected for this event were rising senior
Luanna Summer and
Mary Beth Beiler '13 in 2021. Back then it was known as the Young Women's National Championship.
