Bulldogs Fall to Liberty on Saturday

Audrey Leak and Mila Yarich lead the way with 12 kills each

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Two of Yale's All-Ivy performers led the way on Saturday as Audrey Leak and Mila Yarich notched a team-high 12 kills each in a 3-1 loss to undefeated Liberty in day two action of the Black Knight Invitational.  The scores of the match were 26-28, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-15.

Set Breakdown:

Set 1

Yale came out swinging to take the opening set.  Mila Yarich had six kills on 14 swings, while Carly Diehl had four kills and eight assists.  First-year Laurece Abraham gave Yale a 21-17 edge with a kill.  The Flames stormed back to take a 24-23 lead, and Yarich tied it up on the next point.  Gigi Barr and Diehl closed out the set with the final two points.

Set 2
The Bulldogs led by three points at multiple times during the set, and as late as 18-15 after a Cara Shultz ace.  Liberty used an 8-1 run late in the set to pull away for the victory.  First-year Betsy Goodenow had three kills on nine swings for the Bulldogs.

Set 3
Yale hit .323 in the frame and led 13-11 after a smash from Bonnie Bostic.  Liberty scored six of the next seven points.  The Bulldogs kept it close thanks two kills from Leak, and one both from Goodenow and Yarich.

Set 4
Kills from Leak and Goodenow, and an ace from Diehl tied the set at eight, and Yale took the lead on the next point thanks to a Liberty error.  Diehl and Yarich provided kills for Yale's next two points to keep the set tied.  Liberty went on a spurt from there to take the set and match.

Notes:
  • Goodenow finished with eight kills on 23 swings with only one error.  She also had nine digs and a team-best two blocks.
  • Yale, who led the Ivy League in aces last season, had seven today.  Maile Somera, Diehl and Yarich had two each, while Shultz had one.
  • A day after surpassing the 1,000-dig mark for her Yale career, Somera had team-best 10 today.
  • Barr finished with eight kills and a team-best two blocks.
