Penn Rallies for 3-2 Win in Ivy Opener

PHILADELPHIA – In the Ivy League field hockey opener Friday afternoon at Vagelos Field, Penn rallied from a 2-0 deficit to top Yale 3-2. Penn (3-4, 1-0 Ivy League) scored the game-winner on a penalty corner with 1:25 left. Yale (2-5, 0-1 Ivy League) got goals from junior forward Lily Ramsey and sophomore forward Poppy Beales.

  • Junior forward Lily Ramsey opened the scoring on a counterattack after a Penn corner. She took a long pass from her sister first-year forward Emma Ramsey, dribbled into the circle, cut across and fired in her first goal of the year.
  • Sophomore forward Poppy Beales scored Yale's second goal, knocking in a long pass from outside the circle by junior back Colette Staadecker. Beales has scored in four straight games.
  • Senior goalkeeper Luanna Summer made a kick save on a Penn corner with 45 seconds left in the third quarter to keep Yale's lead 2-1.
  • Summer made another big kick save on a Penn corner with 11:11 to play to keep the 2-1 lead intact.
  • Penn scored on a rebound during a penalty corner at 51:44 to tie the game 2-2.
  • Penn went ahead 3-2 with 1:25 left on a penalty corner goal by Allison Kuzyk, her second of the game. 
  • The Bulldogs brought in a kicking back after Penn went ahead 3-2, and drew a penalty corner as time expired, but they were unable to get off a shot.
  • The game pitted Yale junior forward/midfielder Julia Freedman against her sister, Penn's Sophie Freedman.
  • Penn was picked for third in the Ivy League Preseason Poll, while Yale was picked for fifth.
