NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the third straight Saturday, Team 150 is in Yale Bowl, Class of 1954 Field. This week the Bulldogs host Morgan State in the 2023 NAACP Harmony Classic. Kickoff is slated for noon, and ESPN+ has the stream with Justin Gallanty on the play-by-play and Jack Siedlecki providing analysis.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

• The Bowl is the site of the Harmony Classic for the second straight year. Last fall, Yale's ground attack, led by Tre Peterson (144 yards), Nolan Grooms (130 yards) and Joshua Pitsenberger (87 yards), rushed for 366 yards as the Bulldogs edged Howard 34-26 in front of a crowd of nearly 10,000.

• As part of the event, Yale will be remembering Levi Jackson '50, the first black captain of the football team and the first full-season black captain in any varsity sport among the eight Ivy League institutions. Jackson's daughter Denise will be in attendance and will participate in the coin toss prior to kickoff.

• Each team will also have an honorary captain. All-America running back Calvin Hill '69 will serve for Yale, while Mark Washington, the co-captain of Morgan State's 1969 team, is the honorary captain for the Bears. Hill and Washington were teammates for five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys following their college days and have remained close friends.

• Both Yale and Morgan State are coming off heartbreaking defeats last week. Cornell's Jackson Kennedy booted his third field goal of the afternoon as time expired to lead the Big Red to a 23-21 win on a rainy and windy afternoon. Morgan State, meanwhile, lost in double overtime, 23-17, to UAlbany. The Bears had rallied from a 10-0 deficit to force overtime.

• The Bulldogs are averaging 199 yards rushing in two games this fall, which is 19th in the FCS and second in the Ivy League.

• Two Bulldogs – Joseph Vaughn (12 tackles and a sack) and Osize Daniyan (11 tackles) were named to the Ivy League Honor Roll this week.

• Vaughn leads the Ivy League with 22 tackles in two games.

• Clay Patterson is second in the league in sacks with two. He has recorded a sack in five straight games dating back to last season. His 20 career sacks are fifth in school history.

• The Bulldogs return to Ivy League play next Saturday (Oct. 7) when they travel to New Hampshire to face Dartmouth in the first road game of the season.

HISTORY LESSON

Yale and Morgan State are playing for just the second time. In 1984, the Bulldogs blanked the Bears 41-0 in the Bowl. Rick Koze '86 rushed for two touchdowns as the Bulldogs amassed 257 yards on the ground. Yale led 27-0 at halftime.

SCOUTING MORGAN STATE

The Bears (1-3) are playing their fifth game of the season. Their three losses have come by a combined 19 points, including a three-point decision to FBS Akron. Morgan State has used three quarterbacks this season and all have completed at least 12 passes. Dominque Anthony played last week against UAlbany and was 18-of-39 for 147 yards and a touchdown. He is the only QB to have appeared in all four games. Treveyon Pratt has a team-high 12 receptions and two receiving touchdowns. J.J. Davis leads the Bears' rushing attack with 138 yards on 52 carries. Defensively, Morgan State has allowed its opponents to rush for 99.8 yards per game. The Bears have 13 sacks in four games, led by Elijah Williams, who has four. One of Morgan State's standouts is defensive end Noah Washington, a graduate transfer who played at Central Connecticut and is from New Haven. He has appeared in all four games and has 13 tackles. At Wilbur Cross High School, he was a New Haven Register first team all-state selection in 2017.
