Columbia Wins Back-and-Forth Battle, 3-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A chilly fall night at Johnson Field Friday saw a classic battle between the Yale field hockey team and Columbia. After a scoreless first half, the teams combined for five goals in the second half. The Lions got what proved to be the decisive goal at 53:59 from Delfina Gonzalez Lobo for the 3-2 win.

Yale falls to 9-5 overall (3-3 in the Ivy League), while Columbia improves to 4-9 overall (2-4 in the Ivy League).

Summary
  • Columbia goalkeeper Katie Wimmer made her presence known early on, making seven of her nine saves in the first half. She was a major reason why the game was scoreless at halftime.
  • Yale went ahead on a penalty corner at 32:24 of the third. Hettie Whittington slid a pass over to inserter Ellie Barlow at the near post, and Barlow roofed it past Wimmer.
  • Columbia's Jacinta Etcheberry then scored twice in a span of 4:44 to give the Lions a 2-1 lead.
  • Victoria Collee answered for Yale, scoring her fourth goal of the year and sending the game into the fourth quarter tied 2-2. After momentarily losing a pass from Whittington at the top of the circle, Collee quickly regained possession and fired one past Wimmer.
  • Chiara Picciafuoco nearly gave Yale the lead at 48:02 of the fourth, but her shot on a penalty corner hit the post.
  • Delfina Gonzalez Lobo scored on the rebound of a blocked shot during a Columbia penalty corner to give the Lions a 3-2 lead at 53:59 of the fourth.
  • Yale brought in a kicking back for the final 3:40, but the Bulldogs did not get another shot on goal. They had two shots blocked in the final 3:10.

Notes
  • Yale finished with a 25-7 shot advantage and an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Barlow now has a career high five goals and 14 points.
  • Six of the last seven games between these two teams have been decided by one goal or by a shootout.
  • Yale honored its seven seniors before the game:
