Yale Falls to UTEP in Sun Bowl Invitational Final, 75-74

EL PASO, Tex. — Despite a career performance from Riley Fox, Yale men's basketball fell to the UTEP Miners in the Sun Bowl Invitational Championship game, 75-74, Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center. The loss brought the Bulldogs to 6-6 on the season.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Notable Performance

  • Riley Fox recorded season-highs in points (19), minutes (26), 3-point field goals made (5) and blocks (1).
  • The freshman's 19-point outburst led both sides in scoring.
  • Fox also matched his season high in rebounds with five.

Bulldog Notes

  • The Bulldogs outrebounded the Miners 43-28, including 16-5 on the offensive glass. It was the third-straight game Yale outrebounded its opponent by double figures.
  • Yale outscored UTEP in the paint 32-24 and on second chance opportunities 18-5.
  • Yale's bench scored 45 points in the matchup.
  • Devon Arlington reached season-highs in points (6) and minutes (13).
  • Nick Townsend recorded his second-straight double-double, and third in five games, with his 11 point, 13 rebound performance.
  • Isaac Celiscar played a season-high 26 minutes against the Miners.

Turning Point
After Yale went ahead 10-9 with 12:17 left in the first half, UTEP went on an extended 29-14 run over the next 10 minutes of game time, highlighted by eight points from Otis Frazier III, giving the Miners a 38-24 advantage. The 14-point lead was UTEP's largest of the contest, but forced Yale to play from behind the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs brought the Miners' lead down to one on several occasions, but never took it back themselves.

Who's Next?
The Bulldogs will look to ring in 2025 on the right foot with a home matchup against Howard at 1 p.m. on Jan. 1. It will be Yale's final non-conference game before the start of Ivy League play on Jan. 11.
