UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State's formula for success early this season had been first-quarter success. The Nittany Lions outscored their opponents 17-6 in the opening 15 minutes heading into Saturday's game with Yale.
The Bulldogs turned the tables, taking a 6-1 lead after one and building a 9-2 halftime lead. Penn State, though, rallied, and Jake Morin's goal with 59 seconds left in the first overtime period lifted the Nittany Lions to a 15-14 victory on a wet afternoon at Panzer Stadium.
Penn State's only lead of the game came on Morin's goal in OT.
The loss was the first of the season for the Bulldogs (2-1). Penn State, ranked No. 4 in the USILA poll, has won four straight games since falling to Colgate in its season opener.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
David Anderson scored five goals to lead the Bulldogs.
Max Krevsky added four goals, and
Patrick Hackler tallied twice.
Matt Brandau,
Carson Kuhl and
Peter Moynihan each scored once. Kuhl also contributed four assists, while Brandau and
Johnny Keib had two apiece.
TJ Malone led Penn State with nine points (5 goals, 4 assists).
TURNING POINT
The Nittany Lions scored five straight goals in the first seven minutes of the third quarter to get right back in the game. Anderson scored three times in the quarter as Yale was up four, 13-9, after three. Kuhl's goal with 11:30 left put the Bulldogs in front 14-11, but Penn State scored the final three goals of regulation, including one from Mac Costin with 4:50 remaining that tied the score at 14.
BRANDAU NEARLY WINS IT
Yale had the first best scoring chance in overtime, but a Brandau shot banged off the post. The Bulldogs outshot the Nittany Lions 5-1 in overtime.
NOTES
• Moynihan's goal was the first of his career.
• The teams combined for 100 shots in the game. Yale had a 56-44 edge.
