NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale baseball team split a doubleheader with Dartmouth on Friday afternoon to kick off its Ivy League slate. The Bulldogs were buoyed by a fantastic pitching effort from
Reid Easterly in the first game. The Big Green retaliated with a win of their own in the second contest in a low-scoring affair.
Yale sports a 4-12 record with a 1-1 mark in the Ivy League. Dartmouth sits at 4-9 overall.
Game 1 – Yale 6, Dartmouth 2
How it Happened
- Top 1st | Dartmouth puts two on the board on a homer by Kolton Freeman.
- Bottom 4th | The Bulldogs took advantage of sloppy defense from the Big Green. With Chris DiPrima and Chace Chaplin in scoring position, Alec Atkinson struck out swinging. But the ball got by the Dartmouth catcher. As Chaplin scored on the wild pitch, the catcher threw it over the head of the pitcher resulting in an error. DiPrima scored on the miscue and Atkinson made it all the way to second. After Atkinson moved up to third on a ground ball, the senior took advantage of the Dartmouth defense and stole home to give the Bulldogs the lead.
- Top 6th | Yale showcased their excellent defense to get out of trouble in the sixth. First, third baseman Davis Hanson made a diving play down the line to throw out the runner and steal an extra-base hit. Then, with a man on, Jeff Pierantoni snagged a liner and doubled off the runner at first to kill the Dartmouth threat.
- Bottom 6th | Pierantoni got it done with the bat, doubling into the left-center field gap to score two Bulldogs. Teammate Kaiden Dossa followed suit with a double of his own, sealing the 6-2 win for the home team.
Game Notes
- Starting pitcher Reid Easterly was fantastic for the Bulldogs. After allowing two runs in the first, the senior captain hurled eight shutout innings in a complete game effort. Easterly struck out a career-high 11 batters while only allowing six hits and one walk.
- Atkinson stole his team-leading ninth base of the season. He is a perfect 9-9 on stolen base attempts.
- In the sixth inning, the Bulldogs recorded four doubles in a row by Atkinson, Pierantoni, Robert Ciulla, and Dossa.
- Pierantoni recorded his first two RBIs of the season.
Game 2 – Dartmouth 2, Yale 1
How it Happened
- Top 1st | Dartmouth got on the board with an RBI single.
- Top 2nd | The Big Green tallied their second run of the game on a wild pitch.
- Bottom 5th | Yale catcher Max Imhoff tripled down the right field line. He scored on a throwing error by the Dartmouth shortstop.
Game Notes
- Imhoff tallied his second multi-hit game of the season.
- Atkinson scored his 10th base of the year.
- Pierantoni reached base three times.
- Daniel Cohen started on the mound for the Bulldogs. He threw six innings while only allowing two hits and two earned runs.
