No. 12 Denver Edges No. 8 Yale 12-11 on Buzzer Beater

PHILADELPHIA – A back-and-forth battle between the No. 8 Yale women's lacrosse team and No. 12 Denver came down to the final seconds Monday afternoon at Saint Joseph's Sweeney Field. After the Bulldogs took an 11-10 lead, Denver attacker Lauren Black scored the game's final two goals – including the game-winner with 1.4 seconds left – to get the Pioneers a 12-11 win.
 
Yale, which was coming off a win at Cornell Saturday that moved the Bulldogs to 6-0 in Ivy League play and clinched at least a share of the Ivy League Championship, falls to 12-2 overall. Denver improves to 13-3 overall (5-0 Big East).
 
STATISTICAL LEADERS
  • Junior midfielder Sky Carrasquillo and junior attacker Jenna Collignon had hat tricks. Collignon shot 3-for-3 (1.000).
  • Junior attacker Taylor Everson (1-3-4) and junior midfielders Taylor Lane (2-2-4) and Fallon Vaughn (1-3-4) led the Bulldogs in points.
  • Lane had a game-best six draw controls, and Vaughn added five. 
  • First-year midfielder Katie Clare led the Bulldogs with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior defender Marymegan Wright added three caused turnovers.
  • Junior goalkeeper Cami Donadio made three saves in relief of first-year goalkeeper Laura O'Connor. Donadio played the final 37:23.
 
TURNING POINT
  • Denver goalie Emelia Bohi made a save on shot by Yale junior attacker Taylor Everson with 44 seconds left and the score tied 11-11. The Pioneers then cleared the ball and former Bulldog Olivia Penoyer '23, now a grad student playing attack for Denver, set up Black for the game-winner.

  • Bohi made four of her seven saves in the fourth quarter.
 
NOTES
  • Neither team led by more than three goals at any point in the game. The game was tied eight times.
  • Shots (12-12) and ground balls (12-12) were even.
  • Yale enjoyed a 16-10 advantage in draw controls.
  • This was just the third time this season Yale allowed more than nine goals in a game.
  • In addition to Penoyer, Denver's roster also includes former Bulldog Payton Vaughn '23, sister of Yale's Fallon Vaughn. The Denver coaching staff features associate head coach Brice Queener, whose sister Sarah Queener '03 played for Yale.
