Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against Penn

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale baseball team dropped a doubleheader against Penn on Saturday afternoon at Bush Field. The Quakers topped the Bulldogs 7-4 in the first game, before prevailing 9-6 in the second contest. 

Yale catcher Robert Ciulla was the Bulldogs top offensive threat with a home run, a triple and three RBI during the two-game set. First year Kaiden Dossa and senior Jeff Pierantoni also homered for the Elis. Penn's offense was led by Davis Baker, Asa Wilson, and Wyatt Henseler who combined for 11 RBIs on the day. 

The Quakers improve to 13-13 overall with a 5-3 conference mark. The Bulldogs fall to 7-16 and sport an Ivy League record of 3-5.

Game 1: Penn 7, Yale 4

How it Happened
  • Top 1st | Penn took the lead on a three-run homerun by Wyatt Henseler, his 13th of the season.
  • Top 3rd | The Quakers extended their lead on an RBI single by Ryan Taylor.
  • Bottom 3rd | Robert Ciulla got the Bulldogs on the board with a solo shot to lead off the inning.
  • Top 6th | Penn extended its lead to 5-1 on a sac fly by Calvin Brown.
  • Bottom 7th | Kaiden Dossa led off with a double off the top of the left field wall. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Ciulla hit a pop up in foul territory behind home plate. As three Penn players converged on the ball, the first baseman ultimately made the catch. Dossa took advantage of no one covering home and scored on an improbable sac fly.
  • Top 8th | Penn added two more on a two-RBI double by Asa Wilson to extend the lead to 7-2.
  • Bottom 8th | Following a walk to Alec Atkinson, the senior stole second and later scored an RBI single to right by first year Garrett Larsen.
  • Bottom 9th | Jeff Pierantoni hit an opposite way home run to lead off the ninth. The senior snuck it just inside the left foul pole for his first four-bagger of the season.
Game Notes
  • Ciulla notched his first homer of the season on his third inning blast to left. He tallied two RBIs.
  • Alec Atkinson stole three bases and leads the conference with 14.  
  • Jake Williams reached base twice and picked up his eighth stolen base of the year.
  • The Bulldogs continued their aggressive baserunning approach, going 6-6 on stolen base attempts. They lead the Ivy League in that category with 47 this season.
  • Larsen recorded his fourth RBI of the season.
  • Reid Easterly started the game on the mound for the Bulldogs, throwing 7.2 innings and allowing six earned runs. Carter Kessinger came on in relief to close out the game for Yale.
Game 2: Penn 9, Yale 6

How it Happened
  • Bottom 1st | Yale got on the board first following a one-out double by Chris DiPrima. Davis Hanson chopped one to second that got by the second baseman. DiPrima scored to make it 1-0 Bulldogs.
  • Top 3rd | Penn took the lead with three runs. First, Asa Wilson blooped a single to right to score a run. Two batters later, Davis Baker homered to right to give the Quakers a 3-1 lead after three.
  • Top 5th | The Quakers added two more on a two-run shot by Connor Chavez.
  • Bottom 5th | After two runners reached base to lead off the inning, catch Max Imhoff laid down a sac bunt with two strikes to advance the runners. Larsen reached on an infield single to short which scored a run. Pierantoni then hit a sac fly to left to make it a 5-3 deficit for the Bulldogs.
  • Top 6th | Penn tallied another run on a sac fly to extend the lead to 6-3.
  • Bottom 6th | The Bulldogs battled back in the sixth, scoring three runs to tie the game. Following a sac fly from Atkinson, Dossa crushed a two-run home run to left to even the score at six.
  • Top 7th | Penn retook the lead on a sac fly by Gavin Collins.
  • Top 8th | The Quakers added two more runs to extend the lead to 9-6 on a double by Baker.
Game Notes
  • Dossa hit his second home run of the season with a blast in the sixth.
  • Tommy Martin started at DH and recorded his first multi-hit game of the season.
  • Daniel Cohen started on the mound for the Bulldogs, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing five runs. Ethan Lewis picked up the loss in relief.

The Bulldogs will complete the three-game series tomorrow against Penn at Bush Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
