NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It's been an enjoyable spring for Will Porter, The Friends of YWC Head Coach of Yale women's crew. He's mentoring a young team but one that is eager to learn. Despite the youth, there has been plenty of success. The Bulldogs are ranked sixth nationally and have knocked off a number of ranked crews over the course of the last two months.
 
Porter hopes the success continues in the postseason, which begins this weekend at the Ivy League Championship on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. The heats are Saturday afternoon followed by the finals on Sunday. The first races on Saturday are set for 4 p.m., while the racing begins at 8 a.m. Sunday. The varsity eight grand final is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
 
"This team is super young. We lost 17 athletes from last year, and only six of the current athletes have competed at NCAAs," Porter said. "They have done a great job to put themselves in a position to be competitive for every race we are in. It is refreshing to work with this team. It has been a blast. They are eager to be coached, they are humble and value the team before themselves."
 
WHAT'S AT STAKE
 
The winner of the varsity eight grand final will be crowned the Ivy League champion and awarded the Sally P. Shoemaker Trophy. The Team Trophy will be presented to the team with the highest point total across all boats. The League's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championship will be awarded to the team with the most points across the three NCAA boats (V8, 2V8 and V4).
 
SEVERAL RANKED CREWS COMPETING
 
The Bulldogs are one of six nationally ranked crews competing, including Princeton (No. 3), Brown (No. 7), Penn (No. 11), Columbia (No. 18) and Harvard-Radcliffe (No. 20).
 
"We are excited at the opportunity to compete down the track in the fastest conference in the country," Porter said.
 
HISTORY
 
Three Yale crews won grand finals at last year's Ivy League Championship – the second varsity eight, varsity four and third varsity four. Princeton is the defending Ivy champion after winning the varsity eight grand final.
 
The Bulldogs are seeking their ninth Ivy League title and first since 2010. Yale tied for the overall points title in 2022 and won the team points crown outright in 2018.
