Parsons Wins Single Sculls B Final for U.S. at World Rowing U23 Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's Timmy Parsons (Eugene, Ore.), representing the United States, won the B Final in the lightweight men's single sculls at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships Friday morning in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He thus finished seventh overall.

Parsons took the lead in Friday's race by the midway point and never looked back, finishing more than seven seconds ahead of second-place Nino Duehrkoop of Switzerland. Parsons' time was 6:59.25.

Parsons was one of 13 rowers competing in the lightweight men's single sculls (BLM1x). He opened competition this past Sunday, placing second in his heat and just over seven seconds behind Spain's Caetano Xose Horta Pombo. In Tuesday's repechage, Parsons narrowly missed out on advancing to the A Final. Canada's Emerson Crick overtook him in the final 500m and edged him by 1.19 seconds for second place. Argentina's Santino Menin won.

The 2024 World Rowing Senior, Under 23 and Under 19 Championships are a combined event Aug. 18-25. There are 22 boat classes, including eight lightweight boat classes (four men's, four women's). A total of 1,183 athletes will compete at the historic Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course.

This was Parsons' second time competing at the World Rowing U23 Championships. Last summer in Bulgaria he placed second in the C Final in the lightweight double. In 2022 he competed in the World Rowing U19 Championships, finishing fourth in the B Final of the men's quadruple sculls.

In Parsons' one full season of racing with the Y150 (2022-23), he competed in the varsity eight. During the fall semester of 2023, he raced in the varsity eight that placed fifth at the Head of the Charles Regatta. He did not compete for Yale this past spring, instead training in preparation for the USRowing Olympic Trials. He placed third in the lightweight double.

Parsons is a graduate of South Eugene High School.
