Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bulldogs Come Up Just Short Against UMass

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In an intense and wild back-and-forth affair at Reese Stadium on Saturday evening, the Yale men's soccer team came up just short against the University of Massachusetts. After the Bulldogs erased three separate one-goal deficits, UMass forward Alec Hughes netted the game-winner in the 77th minute to give the Minutemen a 4-3 road victory over the Elis.

With the victory, the Minutemen picked up their first win of the season and improve their record to 1-1-2. The Bulldogs fall to 0-3 early on.

"Credit to UMass for being excellent at what they do," Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of Men's Soccer said. "They are very difficult to play against and punish teams that are not ready to deal with their physicality and intensity.  We have normally been a team that very rarely beats ourselves and makes it difficult for our opponents but we have given up far too many chances and we need to get back to the basics of what has made us successful."

"We did have periods of really good play that can give us some confidence but we need to compete at a high level for the full 90 minutes and we haven't done that yet," Stannard said.

How it Happened
  • 1' | UMass got on the board right off the bat with a goal by Shane Velez. UMass 1-0
  • 4' | GOAL! The Bulldogs answered back just three minutes later. After Quanah Brayboy fed the ball into the middle of the box for Diego Zaffanella, the senior ripped a left-footed shot that was saved by UMass keeper, Alex Geczy. But as the ball trickled away from Geczy, sophomore Joe Farouz streaked in to put in the rebound. 1-1 tie
  • 9' | Following a long throw in into the Yale box, Mike Willis was able to get a header past Bulldogs keeper Chris Edwards to regain the lead. 2-1 UMass
  • 17' | GOAL! On the near sideline, Ryan Cote crossed a ball into the UMass box. The strike was deflected into the net by a Minutemen defender and the Bulldogs tied the game up once again. 2-2 tie
  • 36' | UMass forward Alec Hughes got behind the Yale defense and was able to get a left-footed shot by Edwards to give the Minutemen their third goal of the half. 3-2 UMass
  • 68' | Following a handball in the box, Yale was awarded a penalty kick. Captain TJ Presthus converted the attempt to tie the score once more. 3-3 tie
  • 77' | Hughes scored his second goal of the game resulting in the game-winner. 4-3 UMass
