Six-Game Winning Streak Snapped at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – A pair of penalty corner goals in the second quarter were enough for Temple to knock off the No. 14 Yale field hockey team Sunday afternoon at Howarth Field. The Owls' 2-1 win ends Yale's six-game winning streak.

Yale falls to 12-3 overall (4-2 Ivy League), while Temple improves to 11-6 (2-4 Big East).

Summary
  • Shots were 2-2 in the scoreless first quarter.
  • Temple went ahead 1-0 on a penalty corner goal by Payton Rieger at 16:39 in the second quarter.
  • The Owls extended their lead to 2-0 with another penalty corner goal, this one by Marsha Ariesen at 23:50 in the second quarter.
  • A defensive save at 44:28 in the third quarter by Mara Lenting kept Temple's lead at 2-0. She got her stick on a shot by first-year midfielder Carys Donahoe that was headed in at the far post.
  • With time winding down in the third quarter, the Bulldogs struck for their first goal. For the second time in as many games, junior back Hettie Whittington set up a goal by sending in a long pass from outside the circle that was deflected by a teammate. On Sunday it was sophomore midfielder Chiara Picciafuoco, whose goal at 44:55 was her second of the season. Senior forward Poppy Beales had scored on a similar play in Friday's 2-1 overtime win at Penn.
  • Temple goalkeeper Isabella Ospitale made one of her best saves of the day on a Yale penalty corner with 6:11 left, getting her blocker up to deflect away a shot by senior forward Lauren Venter.
  • With 4:53 left, Yale pulled first-year goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf and brought in a kicking back. After a Yale turnover shortly after that, Temple missed a shot at the empty net, keeping the Bulldogs within striking distance.
  • A defensive save by junior forward Tabs Collier with 3:10 to play kept Yale within one.
  • The Bulldogs were unable to get a shot off in the game's final 5:03.

Notes
  • Yale had not trailed in a game since Oct. 3. That was also the last time Yale allowed more than one goal in a game.
  • Yale allowed Temple only five shots on goal. Only three teams have held the Owls to fewer shots on goal in a game this season.
  • Temple was celebrating Senior Day, playing its final home game of the year.
  • Yale is now 5-2 this season in games that have been decided by one goal (including one win in a shootout after two scoreless overtime periods).
  • Whittington has established a career high with eight assists. She also has a career-high eight goals and 24 points this year.
  • Collier made her first career start.
  • Yale entered the game ranked No. 10 nationally in the most recent NCAA RPI rankings, while Temple was No. 34. In addition to the 10 auto-bids to the NCAA Tournament, there are eight at-large bids. Selections will be announced Sunday, Nov. 9.
  • The six-game winning streak was Yale's longest winning streak since the 2011 team won its final seven games en route to earning a share of the Ivy League title.
