No. 16 Yale Shuts Out Sacred Heart 2-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team shut out Sacred Heart 2-0 on an unseasonably hot and sunny afternoon Sunday at Johnson Field. The Bulldogs outshot the Pioneers 19-3 over the game's final three quarters, overcoming a slow start en route to improving to 5-1 at home this year.
 
Yale is now 7-2 overall (1-2 Ivy League), while Sacred Heart falls to 3-8 (1-3 NEC).

  • Senior forward Poppy Beales, Yale's captain, put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 at 16:10 in the second quarter. She gathered in a pass from sophomore forward/midfielder Chiara Picciafuoco and put a high shot past Sacred Heart goalkeeper Ruby Butler.
  • First-year forward/midfielder Ella Ou went high for a goal also, scoring at 27:36 off a pass from junior back/midfielder Hettie Whittington to put Yale up 2-0.
  • Yale outshot Sacred Heart 9-0 in the second quarter.
  • First-year goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf made a sliding save on a breakaway attempt by SHU midfielder/forward Holly DeAngelo 11 minutes into the third to keep the Yale lead at 2-0.
  • Yale outshot Sacred Heart 4-1 in the fourth quarter, and the Pioneers were never able to threaten Yale's lead.
 
Notes
  • Yale had a 9-2 edge in corners.
  • This was Schwarzkopf's first career shutout. She finished with four saves, totaling 12 for the weekend.
  • Whittington has at least one point in seven of Yale's nine games, including the last three in a row.
  • Sacred Heart uses Johnson Field as its home field. The Pioneers had been 1-3 at Johnson Field heading into Sunday.
