Melissa Gonzalez Elected to USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Melissa Gonzalez, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey, has been elected to the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame. USA Field Hockey announced the 2026 inductee class on Dec. 11. The class includes Gonzalez, Katie (O'Donnell) Bam, Jackie (Kintzer) Briggs and Ben Maruquin as athletes, Pam Hixon as a coach, Renee Chatas as an official and Alva Serrette as a contributor. The inductees will be celebrated by USA Field Hockey in May in conjunction with the Atlanta Cup. 
 
Since its establishment in 1988, the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame has recognized individuals who have achieved success internationally and made significant contributions to the organization.
 
Gonzalez excelled for Team USA, competing in the Olympics in 2012 (London) and 2016 (Rio de Janeiro). She made her U.S. National Team debut in 2010 and helped Team USA earn gold medals at the 2011 and 2015 Pan American Games. She served as the team's vice captain from 2014 to 2016 and was captain in 2018. All told she represented the U.S. in more than 240 international games, including a pair of FIH (Fédération Internationale de Hockey) World Cups. She was a nominee for FIH's Player of the Year Award in December 2017. 
 
At Yale, Gonzalez just led the Bulldogs to a historic season highlighted by the team's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first appearance in the Ivy League Tournament. The Bulldogs ended the year ranked No. 12 nationally, and their 12 wins tied for third-most in a season at Yale. Gonzalez and her assistant coaches, Kerry Kiddoo and Belle Bressler, were honored by the NFHCA as the Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year. 
 
Gonzalez was named Yale's head coach in January of 2022. She led the team to nine wins in her first season, then had the Bulldogs within one win of making the Ivy League Tournament in 2023 and 2024 before finally achieving that breakthrough this year. 
 
Prior to joining the Bulldogs Gonzalez spent four seasons on the coaching staff at Wake Forest, earning a promotion from assistant coach to associate head coach in 2020. Throughout her time with the Demon Deacons they were ranked in the top 25 of the NFHCA poll. In 2018 Gonzalez helped Wake Forest advance to the NCAA tournament semifinals. 
 
Gonzalez starred collegiately for UConn. In her senior year (2010) she was a first team All-American, Mideast Region Player of the Year, Big East Defensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Honda Sports Award. For her career she was a three-time All-American, four-time All-Mideast Region selection, two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year and four-time All-Big East honoree. She helped the Huskies win two Big East Tournament championships and make four appearances in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the national semifinals once and the national quarterfinals once. 
 
Gonzalez graduated from UConn with a Bachelor of Science in coaching and administration in 2011. She served as a volunteer assistant at Yale in 2012. She was a volunteer assistant at UMass in 2014-15 and an assistant U-16 coach for USA Field Hockey from 2019 to 2022.
 
A Cortlandt, N.Y., native, Gonzalez was a two-time All-American at Lakeland (N.Y.) High School.
