Yale Heads to the Empire State for Two Games

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's basketball team heads to New York this weekend to play at Cornell Friday (4:00 p.m., ESPN+, International Stream, Live Stats, Tickets) and at Columbia Saturday (2:00 p.m., ESPN+, International Stream, Live Stats, Tickets).

Last Weekend
Yale (3-21, 2-9 Ivy League) beat Dartmouth 76-59 at Lee Amphitheater last Saturday. Senior forward Grace Thybulle (Irvington, N.Y.) led Yale in scoring with 20 points and was one of four Bulldogs who scored 12 or more. Senior guard/forward Mackenzie Egger (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) was also one of those players, finishing with 12 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double – her ninth of the season.

New Highs for Lee
Senior guard Avery Lee (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) has posted the best numbers of her Yale career this season, setting career highs in games started (19, the first starts of her career) and assists (42; previous high was 14). She is averaging 5.2 points per game, more than three points better than her previous career best (2.1, 2022-23). She has 54 rebounds – 24 more than her previous best (30, 2022-23). Lee, who interned in event operations with the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders last summer, works part-time in the Yale Athletics Department.

Thybulle Enjoying Career-Best Year
Senior forward Grace Thybulle (Irvington, N.Y.) is on pace for career highs in multiple categories:
  • Points per game (7.7; previous high 6.7 2023-24)
  • Rebounds per game (4.9; previous high 3.9 2023-24)
  • Assists per game (1.7; previous high 0.3 2022-23 and 2023-24)

Egger's Chance to Make Yale Women's Basketball History
Since the NCAA began keeping official records of women's basketball stats in 1981-82, no Bulldog has led the Ivy League in rebounding. Senior guard/forward Mackenzie Egger (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) has a chance to change that. She currently leads the league in rebounding (9.5 rebounds per game) and is averaging 1.9 more rebounds per game than the next-closest players, Brown's Gianna Aiello and Penn's Stina Almqvist.

Yale's record for rebounds in a season is 279, set by Barb Liebowitz '78 in 1975-76. Egger is on pace for 247 rebounds, which would rank eighth in Yale history.

Career High in Assists for Capstraw
With three games left in the regular season, junior guard Kiley Capstraw (West Orange, N.J.) has nearly doubled her single-season best in assists. Capstraw has 64 assists (eighth in the Ivy League); her previous high was 33 in 2023-24.

Bulldogs' First Years Are Busy
Among all the schools in the Ivy League, Yale has gotten the most games played (63) and the most minutes (1,110) out of its first-year class. The Bulldogs' first years rank third in the Ivy League in total starts (22). Here is the complete list, ranked by minutes:

School First Year GP First Year Starts First Year Minutes
Yale 109 32 1,763
Penn 101 35 1,558
Dartmouth 81 48 1,536
Cornell 65 32 1,397
Brown 53 13 1,020
Harvard 75 24 1,002
Columbia 58 1 754
Princeton 58 1 719

Scouting Cornell
Cornell (7-17, 3-8 Ivy League) sits in sixth place in the Ivy standings, one game ahead of Yale. The Big Red beat the Bulldogs 57-40 when these two teams met Feb. 8 at Lee Amphitheater. Cornell has already tripled its Ivy League win total from last season.

Scouting Columbia
Columbia (19-5, 10-1 Ivy League), which hosts Brown Friday afternoon, is in position for the first outright Ivy League title in school history. The Lions have shared the title with Princeton each of the last two years, but Columbia's 64-60 win at Jadwin Gym last Saturday leaves the Lions all alone in first place with three games left in the regular season. Harvard and Princeton are tied for second, one game back.
