NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale softball team delivered a commanding performance at 5K Corral Field, sweeping Holy Cross in a doubleheader with wins of 7-2 and 13-4. The Bulldogs improved to 9-10 on the season, while the Crusaders fell to 4-11.
Game 1: Yale 7, Holy Cross 2
- B1 | Yale wasted no time getting on the board. Ella Gandolfo battled for a walk, becoming the Bulldogs' first baserunner of the afternoon. Lauren Perren followed with an RBI double to right-center, putting Yale ahead early.
- B2 | With the bases loaded, Gandolfo worked another deep count, drawing a walk to force in a run. Perren stayed locked in at the plate, ripping her second consecutive double to drive in three more runs, extending the Bulldogs' lead to 5-0.
- B3 | Yale continued to apply pressure. Isabella Fortini scored on a groundout, pushing the lead to 6-0.
- B4 | Sophie Woodridge tacked on another run with an RBI single to left field, making it 7-0 Bulldogs.
- T6 | Holy Cross broke through in the sixth with a two-run home run to right field, but it was too little, too late as Yale secured the win.
Game 1 Notes:
Game 2: Yale 13, Holy Cross 4 (Five Innings)
- T1 | Holy Cross struck first in the nightcap. The Crusaders opened with a second-pitch solo home run before adding two more runs on bases-loaded walks, jumping out to a 3-0 lead.
- B1 | Yale answered right away. The Bulldogs drew two bases-loaded walks to cut the deficit to 3-2. Then, with a full count and the bases still loaded, Sophie Woodridge crushed a double to right field, scoring two runs and giving Yale its first lead of the game.
- B3 | The Bulldogs kept rolling. Maddie Latta plated SJ Mull with an RBI double to the fence, extending the lead to 5-3. Two batters later, Gandolfo dropped a bloop single into shallow left, scoring Latta. Katie Donahey followed with a two-run single after an outfield error, making it an 8-3 ballgame.
- B4 | Yale put the game out of reach in the fourth. Fortini and Mull reached base to set the stage for Latta, who delivered again with a two-run double to left field, extending the lead to 10-3. The Bulldogs tacked on three more runs, scoring on a wild pitch and a Donahey single to center.
- T5 | Holy Cross managed one final run in the fifth, but Yale closed out the run-rule victory in just five innings.
