NEW YORK – After opening the season last weekend at the Fordham Fiasco, the Yale women's cross country team was back at Van Cortlandt Park Friday for the Br. John "Paddy" Doyle Iona Meet of Champions Friday. Competing among nine teams in the Joe Dula Women's Championship 5k, the Bulldogs finished third with 79 points, trailing Princeton (19 pts.) and Columbia (43 pts.).
The race gave the Bulldogs a chance to compete at the site of this year's Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, set for Oct. 31. It also gave them a chance to size up some of their Ivy League and Regional competition. Princeton won the Ivy title last year, while the Bulldogs were third and Columbia was eighth. Three ranked teams from the Northeast Region competed Friday: No. 6 Columbia, No. 8 Army West Point and No. 10 Yale.
The Bulldogs:
- Seniors Claire Archer (11th, 18:22.40) and Charlotte Whitehurst (12th, 18:28.60) led the way for Yale. Archer has been Yale's top finisher in each of her last five races.
- Junior Hebe Chadwick (17th, 18:33.50) was Yale's third finisher.
- The Bulldogs claimed four of the six spots from 21 through 26: senior Linde Fonville was 21st (18:44.50), first-year Phoebe Benun was 22nd (18:49.40), junior Daniella Henderson was 24th (18:54.20) and sophomore Zoe Martonfi was 26th (18:56.80).
- First-year Zoe Carter (49th, 20:18.60) rounded out Yale's squad. She and Benun were both making their Yale debuts.
- Four of Yale's runners on Friday were part of last year's NCAA Regional squad: Archer, Fonville, Henderson and Whitehurst.
