NEW YORK – The Yale women's basketball team hung close with defending Ivy League champion Columbia through the first half on Saturday at Levien Gym, but the Bulldogs ultimately were undone by the third quarter. The Lions outscored Yale 26-6 in the third, hitting 10 of their 15 shots (.667) while limiting Yale to 1-for-5 (.200) shooting. Columbia went on to win 85-58.
Yale fell behind 10-4 early, but eight straight Bulldog points – including six from sophomore guard
Ciniya Moore, who had a rare four-point play at 4:51 of the first – put the Bulldogs in the lead. They were up 18-17 heading into the second quarter.
Columbia pulled off an 8-0 run in the second to go ahead 31-26. The Lions eventually went into halftime with a 37-32 advantage, then went on a 12-1 run at the start of the third. After a free throw by senior forward
Kiley Capstraw, Columbia tacked on five more points to claim a commanding 20 point lead. The lead grew to as many as 29 in the fourth, but that quarter was closely played. The Lions edged the Bulldogs 22-20 in the final frame.
