Bulldogs Open Cactus Cup with Loss to St. Cloud State

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Yale men's hockey team opened play at the 2026 Cactus Cup with a 6–2 loss to St. Cloud State on Friday night. The defeat drops the Bulldogs to 4-9 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 9-10.

First Period: SCSU 1, Yale 0
  • 14:16 – St. Cloud State opened the scoring with a power-play goal late in the period.
Second Period: SCSU 2, Yale 1
  • 2:06 – The Huskies struck early in the second period to extend their lead to two.
  • 3:02 – Just over a minute later, Yale responded. James Shannon sparked a hard-fought offensive-zone sequence, and a shot from Donovan Frias off the back wall caromed to Shannon, who finished into an open net on the right side.
Third Period: SCSU 6, Yale 2
  • 9:37 – St. Cloud State pushed its lead back to two with a goal midway through the period.
  • 10:43 – The Huskies added another just over a minute later to make it 4–1.
  • 14:01 – Yale answered with a gritty response. Donovan Frias and Will Richter battled along the boards, with Frias emerging with the puck. Frias drove hard to the net and put a shot on goal that David Andreychuk finished to pull Yale within two.
  • 18:30 – St. Cloud State added an empty-net goal.
  • 19:00 – Thirty seconds later, the Huskies capped the scoring with their sixth of the night.

  • Noah Pak made 41 saves in net, marking his second 40-plus save performance of the season.
  • James Shannon scored his second career goal.
  • Donovan Frias recorded a pair of assists, earning his first multi-point game of the season and the fourth of his career.

  • This weekend marks Yale's first games outside the Eastern Time Zone since a series at Denver on Nov. 24-25, 2023, and the program's first games in the Pacific Time Zone since the Thunderbird Centennial Classic in Vancouver, B.C., in January 1986.
