Goals from Leathem, Ramsey Deliver Comeback 2-1 Win vs. Temple

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team fell behind 1-0 just 7:01 into Sunday afternoon's game vs. Temple at a rainy Johnson Field. It took more than 14 minutes for the Bulldogs to even the score, then almost 13 more minutes to go ahead. But once Yale had the lead, the Bulldogs' sterling defense did the rest. Temple got only one shot in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs finished off the 2-1 win.

Yale improves to 8-2 overall (2-2 Ivy League), while Temple falls to 5-8 (1-2 Big East).

Summary
  • A turnover in the first quarter led to Temple's goal, as Lucia Magro grabbed a loose ball and came in all alone on Yale sophomore goalkeeper Amelie Schwarzkopf. Magro lifted a shot inside the near post for a 1-0 lead with 7:58 left in the quarter.
  • Yale tied the game at 21:31. Near the goal, senior midfielder/forward Emma Ramsey played the ball up into a gaggle of players. It hit off a defender's stick and deflected in.
  • Temple drew its only penalty corner of the game with 12:41 left in the third (by then, Yale already had five corners). The Bulldogs forced the Owls into a shot that went wide.
  • The Bulldogs took the lead on a penalty corner goal at 10:47 of the third quarter. Following the stick stop, junior midfielder Victoria Collee slid the ball towards the right post. Forward Maddie Leathem deflected it in for the tally.
  • Schwarzkopf came out of the cage to stifle Temple's Kathryn Gauvin on a breakaway after a Yale turnover with two minutes left. The Owls did not threaten again after that.

Notes
  • Senior back Hettie Whittington broke up multiple offensive threats by the Owls in the second half, leading a Yale defense that allowed only four shots for the game.
  • Yale had 10 penalty corners – a season high – and allowed a season-low one.
  • Yale outshot Temple 9-1 in the first half and 19-4 for the game.
  • Ramsey continues to add to her career-best totals in goals (five, tied for second on the team) and points (15, second on the team).
  • This marked the eighth time this season Yale has held an opponent to one goal or fewer.
  • This marked Yale's first win of the season against a team that had beaten the Bulldogs last year. Temple prevailed 2-1 in the 2025 meeting, one of five opponents to beat Yale a year ago.
  • Yale improved to 7-1 at Johnson Field this season.
