PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Yale women's basketball team jumped out to a 13-0 lead Saturday afternoon against Brown at the Pizzitola Center, holding the Bears scoreless on their first eight shots of the game. But Brown, looking to maintain its hold on one of the top four spots in the Ivy League standings, regrouped in emphatic fashion by going on a 22-1 run. The two teams then settled in, trading runs and remaining within eight points of each other until the fourth quarter. The Bears then pulled away for a 66-52 win.
After Yale scored the first nine points of the game, Brown took a timeout just 3:24 in. The Bulldogs added four more points after that before Brown scored its first point, 5:45 into the game on a free throw. The Bulldogs took a 14-10 lead into the second quarter.
Brown eventually erased Yale's early lead when Grace Arnolie hit a three-pointer at 8:42 of the second to put the Bears ahead 15-14. The Bears' run extended to 22-1 before sophomore guard
Ciniya Moore hit a pair of free throws at 3:09 to pull Yale within 22-16.
Trailing 24-21 at the half, the Bulldogs scored the first six points of the third quarter – including a three-point play by
Marisa Chapman for a 27-24 lead. The Bulldogs got their lead to five before Brown answered with an 8-0 run to re-take the lead. The Bears led by as many as five later in the quarter, and by three heading into the fourth.
Yale got within four (46-42) with 6:47 to play on a three-pointer by junior forward
Luisa Vydrova, but Brown then went on a 12-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Yale falls to 5-16 (1-7 Ivy League) while Brown improves to 13-7 (5-3 Ivy League).
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Sophomore guard Ciniya Moore led Yale in points with 15 and assists with four.
- Junior forward Mary Meng led Yale in rebounds with 12.
