NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's lacrosse team built a 6-4 halftime lead, but No. 19 Penn outscored the Bulldogs 5-1 in the second half to pull away for a 9-7 victory on Saturday at Reese Stadium.
The Quakers improved to 4-4 (1-1 Ivy), and the Bulldogs dropped to 3-4 (0-2 Ivy).
Notable Performances
- Connor Gately led Yale with a four-point performance of two goals and two assists. His opening goal came on a man-down situation.
- Sean Grogan scored twice and added an assist.
- William Sheehan scored a goal off a Grogan assist in the second quarter.
- Dylan Blekicki scored a man-up goal, assisted by Gately, in the second quarter. He also picked up four ground balls.
- Cole Jackson recorded a goal.
- Luke Michalik had a team-high five ground balls and had two caused turnovers.
- Ben Friedman had 14 saves in goal for Yale.
- Yale went 1-for-8 on extra man opportunities. Penn went 1-for-7.
Scoring Summary
- Q1 | Gately stunned Penn with a man-down goal at the 12:17 mark to give Yale a 1-0 lead. Penn then answered at 10:17 to tie it at 1-1. Jackson scored followed by Gately again at 7:52 to push the Bulldogs' advantage to 3-1. Penn countered with two late goals in the final seconds of the quarter to make it a tie game. 3-3
- Q2 | Yale dominated in the frame, as Grogan scored at the 8:35 mark off a Gately assist to lead by one (4-3). Blekicki added a man-up goal to make it 5-3, and Sheehan followed with a score to extend the advantage to three (6-3). - Q3 | Penn scored the only goals in the quarter, converting on a man-up opportunity at the 4:55 mark, and then a few seconds later to knot the score up going into the final frame. 6-6
- Q4 | Davis Provost for the Quakers tallied his third goal of the day to give Penn the lead at 7-6 at the 12:28 mark. Penn then followed with two more goals, to extend the advantage to three (9-6) with 10:41 remaining. Grogan pulled one back at the 6:35 mark, but Yale's final possessions came up empty as Penn held on for the win. 9-7 PENN
