Bulldogs Rally for Game Two Win, Split with URI

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale softball battled back in the nightcap to earn a thrilling win over Rhode Island, splitting a doubleheader at 5K Corral Field on Tuesday. The Bulldogs moved to 10-20 overall, while the Rams are now 8-15.

Game 1: URI 4, Yale 2 (8 innings)
  • B3 – Singles from Ella Gandolfo and Libby Peoples put two runners on for Yale. Grace Westmoreland followed with a single to shallow right, scoring both to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. (YAL 2, URI 0)
  • T4 – Rhode Island cut into the deficit, stealing home. (YAL 2, URI 1)
  • T7 – The Rams tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field. (YAL 2, URI 2)
  • T8 – In extra innings, URI took the lead on a sacrifice fly and added an insurance run with a single to left. (URI 4, YAL 2)
  • B8 – Yale put a runner on but could not rally, as the Rams secured the win.

After falling behind early, Yale stormed back in the third and fifth innings to claim a dramatic 9-6 win in Game 2.
  • B1 – With runners on the corners, Elena Ohe drove a ball up the middle to open the scoring. (YAL 1, URI 0)
  • T2 – URI answered with a single and a double to tie the game. (YAL 1, URI 1)
  • B2 – After Isabella Fortini was hit by a pitch and stole second, Gandolfo lined a double down the left field line to bring her home and restore the lead. (YAL 2, URI 1)
  • T3 – The Rams responded with four runs on four hits to take the lead. (URI 5, YAL 2)
  • B3 – Yale answered immediately. Singles from Ohe and Jane Littleton set the table before Fortini delivered a two-run single up the middle. In the next at-bat, Kaitlyn Oikle reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Demi Donahoe to score on obstruction at the plate. Ava Kang followed with a sacrifice fly to center to give Yale the lead.   • T4 – URI tied the game with a single to left. (YAL 6, URI 6)
  • B5 – With runners on second and third, Ella Cross singled through the right side to give Yale the lead. An infield error brought home another run, and Littleton added an RBI infield single to extend the lead. (YAL 9, URI 6)
Notes Looking Ahead
Yale begins an eight-game road trip to open April, traveling to Philadelphia for a three-game Ivy League series against Penn. The Bulldogs will play a doubleheader on April 4, followed by a single game on April 5.
