Bulldogs Defeat Santa Clara, Manhattan to Capture Yale Invitational

Betsy Goodenow earned Invitational MVP

NEW HAVEN Conn. – The Bulldogs defeated Santa Clara 3-1 on Saturday evening to capture the 2026 Yale Invitational.  Yale swept Manhattan earlier in the day as head coach Erin Appleman won her 400th match with the program.

Betsy Goodenow, who averaged 3.42 kills this weekend and hit .316, was named Invitational MVP. 

Santa Clara match summary

Set 1 (26-24, Yale)
  • Betsy Goodenow led the Bulldogs with seven kills.
  • Goodenow had two kills and a block during a 4-0 run to extend Yale's lead to 14-9.
  • Goodenow snapped a 24-24 tie with a kill before a Santa Clara error to end the set.
Set 2 (25-22, Yale)
  • The Bulldogs hit .341 in the set.
  • Yale broke an 8-8 tie with four straight points that included kills from Goodenow, Laurece Abraham and Ava Poinsett.
  • Skylar Jackson had the final three points – all kills.
Set 3 (25-23, Santa Clara)
  • In another back and forth set, Santa Clara jumped out to a 16-13 lead before the Bulldogs took back the lead at 21-18.
  • Abraham and Jackson combined on a block to get Yale within one at 23-22.
  • Goodenow added a kill to push back at set point to make it 24-23. 
Set 4 (25-22, Yale)
  • The Bulldogs trailed 21-20 and rattled off four straight points.
  • During the run, Goodenow had a kill, while Poinsett and Cam Bolane combined on a block.
  • Goodenow closed out the match with her 20th kill.
Notes
  • The Bulldogs have opened the season at 3-0 for the first time since 2018.
  • Goodenow had a team-high 20 kills and hit .419 with eight digs.
  • Poinsett had a double-double with 20 digs and 12 kills.
  • Kalyssa Taggart dished out 46 assists, added eight digs and served up two aces.
  • Abraham had 12 kills and a team-best four blocks.
  • Jackson had eight kills on 26 swings, including several timely points.

Set 1 (25-11, Yale)
  • The Bulldogs hit .379 in the opening set.
  • Trailing 6-4, Yale scored the next six points – including two aces from Arya Jue.
  • Later in the set, the Bulldogs used a 7-1 to take a 19-9 lead.  The run included back to back blocks from Ava Poinsett and Cam Bolane.
Set 2 (25-20, Yale)
  • The Bulldogs used a 7-0 spurt midway through the set to take the lead.
  • Poinsett served up five straight aces during the run.
  • With Yale up 20-18, Bolane delivered kills on consecutive points to put the set out of reach for the Jaspers.
Set 3 (25-11, Yale)
  • Yale started the set on a 6-1 run and never trailed.
  • Abraham had four kills and a block, while Gaby Stasys added three.
  • Isabel Patterson closed out the match with her first kill of the season.
Manhattan match notes
  • Today's victory marked head coach Erin Appleman's 400th win at Yale.
  • The Bulldogs held a 43-27 edge in digs, led by Arya Jue (12) and Skylar Jackson (11). 
  • Laurece Abraham had a team-high 12 kills and three blocks, while hitting .571.
