Summer Sailing

Summer Sailing

Due to COVID-19, all Yale Summer Sailing programs are canceled. This includes all kids/adult learn-to-sail programs as well as memberships. Please email yalesummersailing@gmail.com with any questions. We miss you, and see you next summer!

The Yale Summer Sailing Program is a great way for kids and adults to get out and enjoy the beauty of a Long Island Sound summer, and the excitement of sailing. We are located in Branford, Connecticut at the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club (YCYC) -- one of the best venues for college sailing on the East Coast.

We have a full fleet of z420s and two Optis, as well as locker rooms and outdoor showers. We offer summer camps for children ages 9-18, adult group lessons for anyone over 18, individual or family memberships, and private lessons.

ADULT LESSONS are taught to the beginner and intermediate/advanced levels in 420s. Class sizes are limited to ensure close interaction with the instructors, so please register early.

Both classes are taught in z420s, a 4.2m (14ft.) boat designed to be sailed by two people. They run from 9am to 4pm with an hour-long lunch break. More detailed information about each program can be found below. Please feel free to email us if you have any further questions not found below or on our FAQ page.

Please note that separation into Level 1 and Level 2 will be done the day of the lesson. Both classes are under the same online registration. Please note your sailing experience when you register.

420 Level 1:

Come get a taste of sailing! This hands-on class introduces students to the fundamentals of dinghy sailing.

Day one will begin on land with an introduction to our boats-the z420. You will practice rigging and learn how to steer and control the boats. We will also practice the basics of turning a boat on land. Before going sailing we will cover how to launch and return to the dock and what to do if the boat tips over.

After lunch we will go sailing if the weather permits. On the water you will sail in a calmer area of our cove and practice the skills you learned in the morning. After sailing we will derig and debrief on land.

On day two we will spend more of our time on the water refining the techniques of day one. Depending on comfort you may practice capsizing and/or advance to more challenging skills like sailing close-hauled or you might continue working on the skills from the day before.

After completing the Level 1 class you should be ready for the Level 2 program. Some very quick learners might even be ready to take a boat out on their own as a member.

With your registration you will receive some resources to study. The more you learn beforehand the easier it will be to keep up with the waves of knowledge found in this course

420 Level 2:

This class provides an opportunity for sailors to familiarize themselves with our fleet and location and to refine their sailing skills in the boats available to members. After completing this course most students will be ready for membership.

Level 2 is typically a little smaller than Level 1 so you can expect a more flexible curriculum tailored to your individual level.

We typically cover the finer points of upwind sailing, more advanced boat handling, how to sail in more challenging conditions, and continue to practice the fundamentals of sailing. If you would prefer to sail alone as a member we can cover that well.

2020 Dates: June 20-21, June 27-28 and July 11-12.

Opti/420 Beginner

o Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm

Offered for children with no prior sailing experience. This class emphasizes safety and teaches basic sailing skills including knowledge of parts of the boat, rigging, launching, basic sailing, water safety and confidence in handling all points of sail.  This year, we are incorporating Opti's into our instructional fleet, which will provide smaller sailors with a more appropriately sized boat to experiment with solo sailing. Our beginner class is supported by a staff of Junior Instructors, so there is plenty of supervision and one-on-one instruction.

420 Intermediate

o Monday-Friday 9am-12pm

Teaches improved boat handling to campers already knowledgeable in basic sailing skills, and provides an introduction to racing. The curriculum is an extension of the Beginner class with an emphasis upon independence in rigging, skippering, and boating safety.

420 Intro to Racing

o Monday thru Friday, 1pm - 4pm

Intended for older students already proficient in sailing in most weather conditions.  Instruction emphasizes advanced boat handling like roll-tacking/jibing and the finer aspects of sail trim and the introduction to racing tactics and rules.  This class is particularly suited to aspiring racers and experienced summer sailors.

420 Racing Team

o Monday thru Friday, 1pm - 4pm

The Racing Team continues the racing instruction begun in the advanced class and covers advanced tactics and strategy, starting, sail trim, sail shape, boat setup, and advanced boat handling through practices run by our racing coach. The racing team will participate in junior racing clinics and will enter and compete in local regattas against other yacht clubs.
