Biography

2020: Made four appearances with six strikeouts in relief… Tossed 2.0 innings, allowed one run and had three strikeouts against Richmond on March 8… Season cancelled after 10 games due to coronavirus pandemic.

2019: Made 16 appearances with 8 strikeouts in relief… Tossed two scoreless innings and registered two strikeouts in the win over Cornell Big Red on April 1.

2018: Appeared in 16 games as a pitcher, 15 out of the bullpen...Pitched 19.2 innings with a 4.58 ERA...Tossed two scoreless innings in an 11-4 win at Virginia on March 3. 

2017: Pitched effectively out of the bullpen as a primary reliever... Made 17 appearances... Allowed 31 hits in 32 1/3 innings...Pitched in three Ivy League games with a 2.16 ERA in 8 and 1/3 innings... Tossed an inning of scoreless relief in the clincher to win the Ivy League Championship against Penn on May 16... Pitched three innings of scoreless relief in a 5-4 win at Brown on April 30.

Before Yale: Four-year letter winner at American School in Japan (ASIJ), located in Tokyo; co-captain during his junior and senior years… Received the following awards during both his junior and senior year: the Stars & Stripes Baseball Athlete of the Year, Far East Baseball Tournament MVP, Far East All-Tournament Team, ASIJ MVP; was also named the 2013 ASIJ Varsity Baseball Rookie of the Year… During his senior season he batted .472 with seven home runs, 26 RBI on 66 plate appearances, also stole 11 bases… From the mound he finished the season with a 5-0 record, a 1.37 ERA and three saves… The Mustangs won the Far East Baseball Tournament three straight years from 2014 to 2016… Played for the East Cobb Patriots of Marietta, Ga. as a RHP and MIF for 2014 and 2015… Received excellence in high school language arts and science; also earned the Louis Armstrong Award playing the guitar in jazz band throughout is high school career. 

Personal: Son of Yuka Hayashi and Jathon Allen Sapsford; Father is the president of U.S.-Japan Business Council at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; Mother is a reporter for the Wall Street Journal at the D.C. bureau… Younger sister Maya Hayashi Sapsford belongs to the class of ’19 at Maret in Washington D.C., and plays volleyball.
