Mary Beth Beiler '13 joined the Yale field hockey staff as assistant coach in 2015, returning to her alma mater. She was elevated to a full-time role in 2016, serving as the team's recruiting coordinator. Upon joining the US National Team in 2018, she transitioned to a volunteer role. She then returned to a full-time role in August of 2021.
Beiler has been a big part of Yale's progress in recent years. In 2016, her second season back, she helped the Bulldogs more than double their win total from the previous season, and the team won more league games than it had in the two prior seasons combined. She also helped goalkeeper Emilie Katz '17 earn the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year award along with second team All-Region and first team All-Ivy League honors.
In her first season back at Yale, Beiler helped Katz become a unanimous first team All-Ivy League selection and a second team All-Region selection. Katz finished second in the nation in saves per game with 182 in 17 games (10.71 per game) and was also fourth in the nation in save percentage (.791). Thanks to Beiler's work with the defense as a whole, Yale limited its opponent to two or fewer goals nine times.
Beiler has also been on the rise in USA Field Hockey's various programs recently. She played for the U.S. in the FIH Pro League in 2019 and 2020-21. In 2017 she was named to the U.S. Developmental Squad, an important step to compete for a spot on the U.S. Women's National Team.
Beiler has also been active in indoor hockey. In 2015 she earned a spot on the US Senior Indoor National Squad. In March of 2016 she helped the U.S. to a win in the three-game Can American Series, scoring three goals in the series opener.
Beiler spent the 2014 season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Georgetown field hockey team. She also worked as a Sports Greening Volunteer Intern with the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Beiler (née Mary Beth Barham) experienced plenty of success during her playing career at Yale, including an Ivy League title in her junior season (2011). In her senior season she was chosen second team All-Mideast Region by the NFHCA and was a first team All-Ivy League honoree. She also was selected to play in the NFHCA Senior Game and received a pair of Yale team honors: the Player of the Year Award and the Coaches Award, given to the player who exemplifies principles, direction and persistence in pursuit of field hockey excellence at Yale.
Beiler made a remarkable transition to earn the first All-Region and third All-Ivy honor of her career as a senior. She spent her first three seasons at Yale as a forward/midfielder, where she was a major factor in generating attack. But in her senior year, the Bulldogs found themselves in need of help in the backfield. Beiler wound up being the player who stepped up to fill that void on defense, emerging as a steadying force for a unit that had just one other upperclassman. With her help, Yale held five of its 17 opponents to just one goal.
Beiler, who started all 17 games as a senior and 66 games over her four-year career, also scored 12 goals for her career. That included a pair in Yale's 2-1 overtime win at Harvard in 2012, a victory that made her class the first in school history to go 4-0 vs. the Crimson.
A native of Fairfax, Va., Beiler is a graduate of W.T. Woodson High School. She was in Jonathan Edwards College at Yale and majored in environmental studies.
