Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Yale men's golf team wrapped up its regular season-opener with a two-under, 278 at the Doc Gimmler on Sunday to finish in a three-way tie for second. Among the 14 teams competing at the Bethpage Red Course, the Bulldogs shot the lowest final-round score of the tournament to finish at four-over but Rhode Island held onto its opening day lead to win the event by three shots with a one-over, 841.
Senior captain James Nicholas notched his first tournament victory of the 2018-19 season at the Doc Gimmler by carding a seven-under, 203 over 54 holes to edge second-place Gerald Mackedon of St. John's by a single stroke. Sophomore Teddy Zinsner was Yale's second-best performer, finishing in 4th just four shots back of Nicholas, while sophomore Sean Yi also tied for 11th in the 84-player field.

Meanwhile, the cohort of Bulldogs competing at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate placed two golfers among the top-10 at the event. Senior Matt Smith tied for the individual championship with a one-under, 143 while junior Jordan Weitz tied for 7th after shooting a 148.
