3 QUESTIONS FOR DOWNS

Who is your biggest soccer influence and why?

My father, who was my coach age 8 through 15, continues to be my biggest soccer inspiration. He has made me love the game the way I do and taught me all I know about it. I am a big fan of Pep Guardiola and his philosophy. He has a vision for the game that he never strays from - he coaches total football.

Do you have an idol or hero?

I have always been a massive fan of the Barcelona midfield of Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets. I watch those players to learn from how they play.

Why did you select Yale?

Yale offers an opportunity to pursue an unrivaled intellectual experience but also to compete athletically at a high level. The campus was as captivating as it was welcoming. Everyone I met was very genuine.

Coach Stannard on Downs: "While Nicky was recruited by some very good programs, I think he is one of the most underrated players coming into the Ivy League, if not the entire nation.  His range of passing and ability to pass the ball with both feet accurately and consistently is very rare for a player his age.  Nicky is very confident on the ball and is very good at connecting the lines.  His ability to impact the attacking half with accurate and timely passes is going to help put our attackers in more dangerous positions.  He also does a great job on attacking free kicks."
