The Yale Men's Tennis team lost to Princeton Friday afternoon by a 4-3 margin and will continue the ECAC Championships at Penn on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. against Brown.
The Elis competed toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the Ivy League, with each match coming down to the wire. Yale has shown itself as a team to be reckoned with come Ivy League conference matches in April and will certainly come away from this match with several positive takeaways.
The Bulldogs portrayed their dominance early on, with both the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams getting off to an early lead. At the No. 1 spot, junior Dylan King and first year Michael Sun would eventually fall to Princeton duo Ryan Seggerman and Damian Rodriguez 6-3, but junior Ryan Cheng and sophomore Cody Lin would cruise to a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position to even the score. After a hard-fought match at the No. 3 spot, senior captain Nathan Brown along with first year Arnav Dhingra would give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead, prevailing 6-4 over Princeton's Duo and Holden.
In singles play, first year Michael Sun led the team at the No. 1 spot but ultimately fell to Princeton's Seggerman 6-4, 6-3. Dylan King pounced on his opponent early, allowing Yale to reclaim their lead with a smooth win at the No. 2 spot. However, the Princeton Tigers were able to dig in and wrest the Nos. 5 and 4 matches from Cody Lin and Arnav Dhingra with respective scores of 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Facing a 3-2 team deficit, junior Andrew Heller was able to escape with his first win of the spring season, defeating Princeton's Wasserman 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Ryan Cheng mounted an impressive third set comeback at the No. 3 spot, but was edged out by Princeton's Poling 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 to clinch the match for the Tigers 4-3. Yale will certainly look to come back strong against Princeton again in April, but for now will refocus their attention to a young and talented Brown squad for Saturday's match.
