Matt Fluhr, who spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Navy, joined the Yale heavyweight crew staff as an assistant coach in August of 2022.
As an assistant coach Fluhr helped the Mids place sixth in the Ten Eyck point standings at IRAs in 2021, with all four boats finishing in the top 10. In 2022, Navy’s three boats at IRAs all finished in the top 15. Fluhr also served as the team’s recruiting coordinator.  Â
Fluhr’s rowing career included competing with the 2007 U.S. Junior National Team in the Junior World Championships in Beijing, China. At Navy, he stroked the first varsity boat for three years and was a two-time recipient of the Rusty Callow Award, the highest honor for a Navy heavyweight rower. He served as team captain his senior year, leading the Mids’ first varsity eight to a fifth-place finish at the Eastern Sprints – the best finish by a Navy first varsity boat since 2004. The Mids’ 1V finished 10th at IRAs.Â

After graduating with a B.S. degree in ocean engineering, Fluhr was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer and served in the United States Navy for more than six years. As an active duty member of the Navy, he was a division officer with the USS Ingraham serving as both the gunnery officer and main propulsion officer. Following his time with the USS Ingraham, he moved on to Coastal Riverine Squadron TWO as a platoon commander and seaward security officer.Â

Fluhr rounded out his service with an assignment at the Naval Academy. From January of 2017 to February of 2019, he was an operations officer at the sailing center and instructor in the SEANAV department. He also served as the officer rep for the heavyweight crew team and volunteered at practices when time allowed.

Fluhr’s coaching experience also includes a stint as head coach at the US Rowing U19 High Performance Camp in 2021.Â

Prior to attending the U.S. Naval Academy, Fluhr graduated from Christchurch School.
