Matt started in the singles line-up in half of the team''s dualmatches last season playing in the #4-#6 position. He finished theyear with an 11-11 overall record. He won just one doubles in adual match, but it proved to be an important one. Filling in for aninjured teammate at #3 doubles against Princeton he faced 3 matchpoints while down two breaks 3-7 in the deciding match. On eachoccasion Matt drilled his return setting up his partner for an easywinner. They fought back to win in a tie-breaker and the team wenton to win the match 4-3. Matt posted a 12-16 singles record and a4-6 doubles record as a freshman. In singles, he played in the #5and #6 position. Matt earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors that year.Prior to Yale, Matt was ranked among the top 60 nationally in the18 & under division. In high school, he was a two-time captainand three-time MVP of the Bolles School, and won three statesingles titles and two state doubles titles.
