Season Kicks Off Feb. 22-24 At Grand Canyon Purple Classic
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Preparations are well under way for what should be a very challenging 2019 schedule for the Yale softball team. The Bulldogs, who began practice on Feb. 1, are set to play 47 games, including 17 in the friendly confines of 5K Corral Field at DeWitt Family Stadium. The opening date is Feb. 22 with games against Boise State and North Dakota at the Grand Canyon Purple Classic in Arizona.
The Purple Classic is the first of three straight tournaments to open the season. Yale heads to the Towson Invitational on Mar. 1-3 before taking part in the Parent's Weekend Tournament at Florida Atlantic on Mar. 8-10.
The home opener on Mar. 16, a doubleheader vs. Penn, is also the Ivy League opener. In addition, the Bulldogs will host three-game series with Ivy rivals Dartmouth (Apr. 6-7) and Columbia (Apr. 20-21).
Princeton (Mar. 23-34), Cornell (Mar. 30-31), Brown (Apr. 13-14) and Harvard (Apr. 27-28) are the Ivy road trips.
The Bulldogs also will have the opportunity to test themselves against several in-state opponents. Hartford will join Yale at the Towson Invitational. In addition, the Bulldogs visit Fairfield (one game, Mar. 13) and host doubleheaders vs. Central Connecticut (Mar. 27), Quinnipiac (Apr. 3) and Sacred Heart (Apr. 17).
Optimism is high as the Bulldogs get ready to kick off the season. Yale returns four All-Ivy selections from a year ago – seniors Shelby Kennedy and Carlin Hagmaier and sophomores Sydney Grobman and Miranda Papes.
The official Ivy League preseason poll was announced on Wednesday, and the Bulldogs were projected to finish seventh. That should only serve as extra motivation for an already very determined bunch.
