NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Samantha Martinelli made her first appearance in this week's Oracle/ITA National Tennis Rankings, coming in at No. 123 in the country. Martinelli's upward surge could not come at a better time, as the Yale women's tennis team will head to Montgomery, Alabama to participate in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic this coming weekend. The field consists of eight of the best teams from around the country, including Oklahoma St., Auburn, Texas Tech, Fresno. St, Alabama, Illinois and Wake Forest.
The Bulldogs are seeded sixth and will take on Wake Forest in the first round. Wake Forest is the No. 33 team in the nation according to the Oracle/ITA Division I Women's Rankings; leading the way are two top 100 singles players in No. 40 Emma Davis and No. 96 Anna Ulyashchenko. The Demon Deacons are coached by Jeff Wyshner and will prove to be a tough first round opponent for the Bulldogs.
Oklahoma State is the top ranked team in the tournament and is No. 13 in the country. The University of Illinois, No. 22 in the country, is the second ranked team and actually a familiar foe for the Bulldogs; during last year's classic, the top seed Fighting Illini beat the Bulldogs in a highly competitive first round match. Yale ultimately finished that iteration of the Blue Gray Classic in sixth place.
Play begins on Friday at 9:00 AM and will continue through Sunday. Full draws are available here.
