Helen Tau

Helen Tau joined the Yale women's basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach in July of 2023. She was an assistant at Colgate prior to joining the Bulldogs.

In 2024-25 Tau helped the Bulldogs finish in the top three in the Ivy League in offensive rebounds (12.1 per game) and bench points (15.3 per game). They had an honorable mention All-Ivy League selection (Mackenzie Egger) and a CSC Academic All-District honoree (Grace Thybulle).

In 2023-24 Tau helped the Bulldogs finish in the top three in the Ivy League in offensive rebounds (12.7 per game) and steals (7.52 per game). The Bulldogs earned an impressive 74-68 overtime win at Penn, rallying from an 11 point deficit. Yale made dramatic year-to-year improvements in shooting percentage (up 21 percentage points) and free throw percentage (up 18 percentage points). The Bulldogs also decreased their turnovers by 2.8 per game.and increased their assists by .8 per game. Yale had two CSC Academic All-District selections (Jenna Clark and Brenna McDonald).

In 2022-23 at Colgate Tau helped the Raiders finish ninth in the nation in three-point percentage defense (.256) and 12th in the nation in points allowed per game (54.6). They led the Patriot League in those categories and in turnover margin (3.40). They won the final four games of the regular season to secure the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and a 10-8 conference record – a six-win improvement over the previous season. 
 
Prior to her time at Colgate, Tau worked at Princeton alongside Dalila Eshe, Yale's Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Women's Basketball, who was an assistant for the Tigers from 2019 to 2022. They helped Princeton end the 2019-20 regular season on a 22-game unbeaten streak, the second longest in the country behind No. 1 South Carolina. Princeton was ranked No. 9 in the RPI, the best mark in Ivy League history.
 
Prior to her time at Princeton, Tau spent two seasons at Georgetown as the director of video operations, helping the Hoyas reach the WNIT quarterfinals in 2019 and land a top 100 HoopGurlz/espnW recruit in 2018. 
 
Before her stint at Georgetown, Tau was a graduate assistant for two years at Texas. She helped the Longhorns make a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. That included a run to the Elite Eight in 2015-16, when they finished with a 31-5 record. In addition to helping with video breakdown, Tau created a metric system to evaluate player performance during games and practice. 
 
As an undergraduate at Texas Tau served as a student manager before walking on to the team as senior in 2013-14. That year she helped the Longhorns make a 10 win improvement over the previous season and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014.
 
In addition to her work at Texas, Georgetown, Princeton and Colgate, Tau also has experience coaching with Westlake Hoops, where she worked with players aged 12-17 in 2013-14. 
 
Tau graduated from Texas in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in business honors and finance before earning her master's degree in sport management in 2017. She earned a master’s degree in integrated marketing communication from Georgetown in 2018.

Tau is a native of Lake Jackson, Texas, and a graduate of Brazoswood High School.
