Matthew Lord joins the Yale men’s tennis coaching staff following a highly accomplished playing and coaching career at the junior and collegiate levels.

Originally from Bloomfield, Conn., Lord brings a unique perspective to coaching through his experience competing at the highest levels of junior and collegiate tennis, along with his background in performance psychology and athlete development. His coaching philosophy centers on developing complete competitors who are technically prepared, mentally resilient, accountable to their teammates and confident in their ability to perform when it matters most.

Lord was a standout junior player at Kingswood Oxford School, where he compiled a 109-3 career record and was ranked as high as No. 6 nationally in his recruiting class. He continued his playing career at the University of Virginia from 2017-21, earning VaSID All-State honors in doubles and finishing his collegiate career with 86 combined singles and doubles victories. Lord reached as high as No. 35 nationally in doubles, advanced to the final of the ITA Atlantic Regional and made his ATP Challenger debut at the Charlottesville Challenger.

Following his playing career, Lord served as a Graduate Assistant Coach with the George Mason University women’s tennis program. He also served as Director of Mental Performance at A Plus Tennis Academy in Burke, Va., where he worked with competitive junior players on the mental and competitive aspects of the game, including confidence, composure, preparation, leadership and performing under pressure.
