Junior goalie Josh Gartner was on top of his game and had a 1-0 advantage late in the third period hoping to pull off the improbable on the ice of Yale's archrival. But the second Bulldog win ever at the Bright Center was not to happen on this night. Harvard scored three late goals, two on the powerplay, to earn a 3-1 victory over Yale before 1,811.
Gartner, who finished with a season-high 44 saves, made 30 through the first two periods of a scoreless game broadcast live on CSTV. Gartner got some help at the other end when sophomore forward Brad Mills tallied on the powerplay 6:26 into the final period for a 1-0 lead. But the goalie's good fortune came to an end with 5:36 left in the game when Harvard's Andrew Lederman evened the score with the man advantage.
Jon Pelle broke the tie at 17:14 with the game's only even-strength score and Brendan Bernakevitch added another power-play score with under a minute to play to put it out of reach.
Harvard, which finished 2 of 9 on the powerplay, outshot the visitors 47-22 in improving its record to 1-2-1. The Bulldogs (0-5, 0-3 ECACHL), who will try for their first win Saturday night at Brown, were 1 for 4 with the advantage.
Dov Grumet-Morris needed 21 saves to pick up the win for Harvard in goal.
