Chris Myers had two goals and Joe Fallon earned his fifth shutout of the year as the Vermont men's hockey team defeated Yale 5-0 before 3,486 at Ingalls Rink.
Despite going scorless on seven power-play opportunities, Vermont (17-11-3, 11-6-2 ECACHL) earned sole possession of fourth place in the league by outshooting Yale 40-11. It was the fourth time this season that Yale (4-20-2, 4-15-1) has been blanked.
The Cats dominated the opening period and outshot the Bulldogs 10-2 while having two of the three power plays. Neither of the extra-man chances turned into goals but UVM still took advantage of their opportunities.
Freshman defenseman Slavomir Tomko made a great move as he split the Bulldog defense through the slot before snapping off a low shot past Matt Modelski at 5:54 of the first to make it 1-0.
Despite two shots on net, Yale still had its chances to even the score. Junior forward Christian Jensen had a breakaway that Fallon knocked away with a save.
It looked like the visitors might take a 1-0 lead into intermission until Matt Syroczynski stole a pass at the Yale blueline and fired a long shot on Modelski that bounced off his pads. The puck landed right on the stick of sophomore winger Andy Corran, who easily banged it home with 48 seconds left to make it 2-0. It was the third goal of the year for both UVM skaters.
Vermont continued to have control in the second and tallied two more goals, again without any help from its special teams. Myers, a sophomore winger, nailed his ninth of the year at 6:41 on a high shot from the slot.
The Catamounts, led by captain and Stratford, Conn., native Jaime Sifers, got another five minutes later on a crossing pass that junior forward Jeff Corey may have tipped past Modelski. Even on video, it was very difficult to tell how the puck made it into the back of the net at 11:52.
The fourth goal for UVM brought a change in the Bulldog net as junior Josh Gartner replaced Modelski, who finished with 15 saves.
Gartner, who allowed just one goal, was solid and halted 20 shots, including 17 in the final period. The only miss was Myers' second of the night, which came after he blocked a shot by Yale's Robert Page and then went down alone on the Yale goalie. Myers wrister hit the post and went in at 5:12 of the third.
The Bulldogs host Dartmouth Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., half an hour later than the normal start time at Ingalls.
