Clarkson Gets Revenge For One-Goal Loss at Ingalls

Feb. 4, 2005

Jay Latulippe scored both goals and Dustin Traylen stopped 25 of 26 shots as the Clarkson men's hockey team skated to a 2-1 win over Yale before 2,029 at the Cheel Center.

It was the first conference win over the Bulldogs in three seasons for the Golden Knights, who outshot Yale 29-26. The struggling Elis did what they had to do, holding Clarkson to just two goals while being called for just six penalties on the road in a tough place for visiting squads. The only problem was generating enough quality scoring chances in the first two periods.

The Bulldogs (3-18-1), the most penalized team in the conference, enjoyed a penalty-free first period while being outshot 11-8. Sophomore goalie Matt Modelski stopped 10 of 11 shots for Yale, the lone shot that got past him coming off the stick of Latulippe, Clarkson's leading scorer, just 2:52 into the game.

Modelski, who earned a 2-1 win over the Knights (9-16-2) last month at New Haven, finished with 27 saves and deserved a better fate than his eighth loss of the season.

Yale went without an infraction until early in the second period. The Elis' overworked penalty kill survived the first Golden Knights attempt, but the second produced another goal. Yale junior center Jeff Hristovski went off at 6:07 and 40 seconds later Latulippe had his second tally of the night to make it 2-0 with his 12th goal of the season.

The Blue was fortunate to escape with just a goal allowed in a period where the home team had 16 of the 20 shots on net including four man-advantage situations.

The visitors came out firing in the third period and put the frame's first nine shots on goal. The Elis managed to put 13 shots on net compared to Clarkson's three in the final period, but the skaters from New Haven managed just one goal.

Yale junior blueliner Matthew Craig, who entered the game without a goal this season, notched the second of his career at 11:04 of the third on assists from Joe Zappala and Zach Mayer. It was an even-strength goal that changed the entire complexion of the game.

Clarkson made it even more interesting when it was called for too many men on the ice with 2:34 left. A frantic Bulldog squad continued to put shots on Traylen, who needed 13 saves in the last period, before pulling Modelski for the extra skater at the 18:25 mark.

Clarkson managed to kill off the power play and the man-advantage with the pulled goalie to snap Yale's conference win streak over the Knights.

Both teams were called for six penalties but the difference was Clarkson converting one of the five power-play chances while the Elis went scoreless in five tries.
