Three different Bulldogs scored goals while outshooting their exhibition game opponent 43-17 in Yale's 3-1 win over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in the Showcase Tournament at Brown's Meehan Auditorium.
The afternoon game at Providence could have been a nightmare for UOIT if not for its goalie, Matt Meteja, who turned away 36 shots including 21 in the final frame. Mateja played all but five minutes of the game and gave up all three Eli goals.
Sophomore forward Broc Little's slap shot from the top of the circle off an odd-man rush trickled through the UOIT netminder at 5:41 of the first period to open the scoring. Jeremy Whelan's even-strength goal nearly three minutes later tied it for the guys from Canada.
Senior Alec Richards had the first 32 minutes in goal for Yale and stopped nine of 10 shots before junior Billy Blase knocked away all seven shots on target the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs, who open the regular season Saturday night in the same building against Brown, notched a pair of goal in the second to end the scoring.
The game's third tally was the only power-play score. Junior forward Mark Arcobello banged home an attempted shot by sophomore teammate Denny Kearney at 4:17 of the middle frame. Almost nine minutes later, newcomer Kevin Peel one-timed a crossing feed past Mateja's blocker.
Yale outshot UOIT 21-6 over the final 20 minutes but couldn't reach the net.
