Mark Arcobello had a goal and an assist and Alec Richards stopped all 17 shots he faced as the Yale men's hockey team opened its home schedule with a 3-0 ECAC Hockey win over Brown at Ingalls Rink.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference, outshot the visitors 42-17 and converted two of nine man-advantages to win their third straight game and beat Brown for the second time this season.

Brown junior goalie Dan Rosen made 39 saves and kept his Bears (0-4-1, 0-2-1) in the game until the very end.

Richards, who had Yale's last shutout (3-0 over RPI in last year's regular-season finale), had an easy first period with two saves and then needed 10 in the second to keep Brown from inching close to its first win of the year.

Rosen had a huge first period, stopping all 17 shots as the Elis dominated (17-2 shots) play without anyone putting the puck in the net during a nine-penalty, seven-powerplay opening frame.

"We came out with a lot of jump and created a lot of chances," said Keith Allain '80, Yale's Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach of Hockey. "It's important to never get frustrated. We set the table with our work ethic in the first period for good things to come."

The second period was a much more balanced (Yale 11-10 in shots) one though the Elis cashed in on two of their power-play chances this time.

The Bulldogs finally broke through on the 18th shot to take a 1-0 lead 55 seconds into the period with a 5-on-3 advantage. Freshman Brian O'Neill was camped on the doorstep when Arcobello's shot was stopped by Rosen. O'Neill went low to poke the puck home the rebound for his first collegiate goal.

Yale made it 2-0 on another power play at 5:15 of the middle frame. Arcobello, who notched his fourth goal of the year, was the first to get a loose puck off a crossing feed that hit Broc Little's stick in the slot. Arcobello backhanded a sneaky one that bounced off the left post and into the back of the net from the inside edge of the left circle.

"If we can get the shots, we know they will eventually go in," said Arcobello, who is tied with Sean Backman for the team lead with four goals. "We needed to show each other that this goalie (Rosen) was beatable."

The Bulldogs iced the game when Brown pulled Rosen from the net with under a minute to play. Sophomore Denny Kearney, who also had two points, stole a pass by a Brown defenseman at the point and fired a shot into the empty net with 30 seconds left for his first goal of the season.

Yale is home next weekend for a pair of games with Alabama-Huntsville. Both are 7 p.m. starts.
