HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman Marc Powers
(Stamford, Conn.) advanced to the semifinals of the Wilson/ ITA
Regionals Monday morning at Dartmouth. Powers defeated the
No. 3 seed Mihai Nichifor of Columbia 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the
quarterfinals to advance. He will play Columbia's Haig
Schneiderman, the No. 17 seed, in the semis Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Powers has now won four straight matches against seeded
opponents en route to making the semifinals. Power's victory
over Nichifor was just his second three-setter of the entire
tournament as he has won three of his five matches in straight
sets. Powers has now defeated three Ivy League opponents in
this tournament.
Powers became the second Yale player in as many years to advance
to the semifinals of the Wilson / ITA Regionals. Captain Jeff
Dawson '09 did the same when Yale hosted the event last year.
Powers and senior captain Connor Dawson advanced to the
semifinals of the main doubles draw Monday before losing. The
duo pulled out an 8-6 victory over the No. 4 seed Haig Schneiderman
and Jonathan Wong of Columbia in the quarterfinals. Dawson
and Powers then lost 8-5 to Harvard's Alistair Felton and Andy
Nguyen, who ended up winning the tournament.
